Brother Blue Award 2012

The Brother Blue and Ruth Hill Award 2012

Congratulations

Kevin Brooks and Laura Packer receive the Brother Blue and Ruth Hill Award for 2012 from Ruth Hill and Robert Smyth.

Kevin Brooks and Laura Packer, dedicated LANES members from Malden, Massachusetts, were chosen as the awardees of the much coveted Brother Blue & Ruth Hill Award for their support, dedication and contribution to Storytelling. Each of these incredible storytellers as individuals have made significant contributions in their own right to supporting and promoting storytelling and storytellers in New England and throughout the country and world for that matter. They are the perfect team in many ways not unlike Ruth and Blue themselves. Their continual support of storytellers in the development of their art is endless.

“They are an essential part of the fabric of the storytelling world.

Each with their own, very individual style of telling, organizing,

and celebrating is essential in this community  because they have

created the weave that their lives and skills now hold.

It is one thing to step into a role and fulfill it well, but Kevin and Laura have

created a tapestry of community and opportunity that we all find some splendor in.”

                                          Judith Black

Just a few of the accomplishments of Kevin and Laura extracted from nomination letters:

  • Took on the mantle of continuing one of Blue’s babies (the Tuesday night story-swap in Cambridge now known as “Story Space.”) when Blue was incapacitated. Supported Blue and Ruth themselves throughout his illness and death. Brought together the Storytelling community to honor and mourn Blue and arranged a tribute on Cambridge Cable TV and at First Night last year.
  • Countless hours and volunteer tasks they have taken on to make Sharing the Fire (STF) the wonderful conference that it has become. Laura was chair of the STF committee, as well as an opener, led workshops and story swaps. Kevin has been Robert Smyth’s assistant sound technician, has led workshops, and the infamous hot tub/pool swap.
  • Laura was on the NSN board as Northeastern regional Director and received the prestigious NSN NE region service and leadership award in 2009.  She also inspires and helps tellers old and new through mentoring, her blog and the Friday night story-swap that she ran for many years in Medford at the Bestsellers Cafe.  Unfortunately it has closed for renovations but she hopes to resume it in the future.
  • Both Kevin and Laura  have made inroads for storytelling in the corporate world, Laura as a consultant & Kevin through his work at Motorola, as well as through his book on Storytelling for User Experience to aid computer software professionals in their work.  Dr. Kevin Brooks earned his PhD at MIT combining storytelling and technology.
  • Assists Marni Gillard every year at Pyramid Lake Storytelling retreat weekend.
  • With their generous hearts and sharing of themselves (be it mentor, coach, volunteer, storyteller, friend) Kevin and Laura nurture and support our storytelling community.  Their professionalism raises the bar for others to attain. Kevin volunteered on the Three Apples committee and countless other storytelling venues, and events. Kevin has been a mentor for several tellers including myself. Laura is currently mentoring Diana Weisner, a bright new voice & powerful do-gooder in the general community.

About The Brother Blue and Ruth Hill Award

This award is named in honor of its two original recipients Brother Blue (a.k.a. Dr. Hugh Morgan Hill) and Ruth Hill. Both have long been recognized and honored as tireless in their promotion of storytelling and storytellers throughout the New England region.

Each year the LANES Board of Directors presents the award to one recipient in recognition of his or her extraordinary commitment and efforts to promote a broader understanding of the art of storytelling and the support of storytellers in the development of their art. It serves, as Brother Blue, has said, “To honor those who give their lives to storytelling to change the world.”

For a candidate to be considered for this award they must have demonstrated their dedication in creating and nurturing a strong storytelling community, be it by individual mentoring, guild or event venues or by fostering a greater public awareness of storytelling and its applications in all areas of society.

A Living Tribute to Brother Blue

The passing of Brother Blue leaves a hole in our lives. That hole, though painful, also creates a space to be filled with good work.

The recipients of this award and the tellers in the streets, prisons, schools, churches and around the table are a

A Living Tribute to Brother Blue.

The Story Space 20th Anniversary Celebration

On February 7, 2012, storytellers from Boston and beyond celebrated a milestone:
The series begun in 1992 by world renowned master storyteller Brother Blue and his wife, Ruth Edmonds Hill marked the occasion with a blowout evening of top shelf storytelling and a few surprises.

Brother Blue has since passed on and Ruth Edmonds Hill is no longer involved in running the series, but a team of committed regulars carries the torch to this day with the same Tuesday evenings of eclectic open mic plus features from as far away as northern N.E., New York, other parts of the U.S. and even Great Britain.
