The Northeast Storytelling Conference 2012 March 16th - 18th 2012
March 18, 2012 – Sunday Session D 1:30 PM – 3:00 PM
(Hudson River Ramblers)- Showcase- “Don’t Tread on ME”-Revolutionary Tales on Bullying and Character ( Showcase - 60 min. session.) Discover how your own local history, can build character and deal with bullying. Using stories and songs from the American Revolution, The Hudson River Ramblers reveal values you may turn into learning activities in storytelling, schools, libraires and historic sites. Find out why “Yankee Doodle” helped George Washington win. Categories- Culture & Community; Education /Youth Levels: All Michael Parent – “Mentoring- One Possible Approach” This participatory workshop, for all levels of storytellers, will include demonstration, exercises, and role playing, introducing an approach to the mentor-mentee relationship. Attendees will gain a practical method of mentoring or being mentored. Handouts will be available and participants should come ready to try things. Categories- Performing Skills; Coaching Levels:All performers Julia Morris - “Journeys Through Narrative; Stories That Move and Sing” Join Julia M. Morris, a storyteller with Early Stages, Inc., as she moves you through the settings and imaginative terrain of various tales. In this interactive workshop, participants will employ the modalities of body, voice and imagination to enter, live inside, and extend the experience of story. Detailed hand-outs provided. Regina Ress- “Bilingual Storytelling: Adding Flavor and Fun to your Story” Deliciously open up your storytelling to the diversity of language that enriches our world. Add flavor and texture that deepens the story experience by adding words and phrases of the original language. Invite your audience to share the language as you share world tales with them. Priscilla Howe –“Going Deep: Telling Tales of Epic Proportions” Hungry for depth, substance, and a rich, tasty story experience? Long traditional stories can be a hearty feast in a fast-food two-minute world. We’ll look at why and how to choose, research, prepare and tell stories of epic proportions, the taproot of modern storytelling For intermediate and advanced storytellers. Fran Yardley- “ Journeys to Transformation: Sharing our Experience of How Story Heals” What is healing story? Who is it for? Why is it important? Drawing from thirty years experience, Fran will share a keynote exploring these questions. Participants at all levels will be actively engaged to share their own experiences, expanding the discussion of the past, present and future of healing story. Mary Stewart – “Gathering at the Table of Life-“ We pass on more than the mashed potatoes when we break bread together. In this fast food world, let’s slow down to explore the stories and rituals of the table -- and remember together what feeds us and makes us human beings. Category- Culture & Community Levels: All
Bob Reiser- “Mind-Movies (Envisioning your Stories with New Eyes)” “She was red. Hot as the sun. She lived in a cave and danced with flames. She owned all the fire in the world.” A dream? A film? Deborah Freedman – Showcase- “Grandma are you with me!” ( Showcase - 60 min. session.) Our time is now. Open to the heart's language, fairy tale, and create a story for the grandchildren, actual or perceived, we love.
